Enjoy culinary delights on exotic Surin

One thing to know about Phuket living is that every little area offers local restaurants that are almost certainly frequented by those who live not far away. Having lived on the stunning island of Surin for the last two years, I certainly have been spoilt by what area has to offer. From little cafes serving perfect egg benedicts to beachside restaurants serving fusion cuisine and resorts serving Sunday brunch with free-flow white wine – Surin truly is heaven for those with a weakness for food.

Let’s start with the most important meal of the day: breakfast. Paula’s at Surin Beach is certainly a favourite amongst residents of the area. It is opened from 08:00 am to 4:00 pm everyday, making it the best place to go for a late breakfast. The menu includes: eggs benedict with ham served on half a muffin, fresh yoghurt and fruit, homemade chocolate cake, and freshly baked whole grain breads. The café also serves light healthy lunch choices like vegetable quiche and salads with avocado, mango, and prawns.

The Twin Palms does a very good breakfast spread but is more famous for their Sunday brunch where free-flow white wine is served with a smorgasbord comprising fresh seafood like crab and oysters, roast beef and chicken with gravy, salads, cheeses, and desserts.

Taste – a brand new beachside restaurant on the Surin strip – is just metres from the sea, and boasts creative world cuisine. Pork belly slowed-cooked in a broth flavoured with anise and served with chopped spring onions and coriander is a westernized version of the traditional Malaysian dish – Bah Koot Tay. Other items include: Nepalese curry, duck with orange sauce, prawns on toast, and the best chocolate mousse on the island.

If you had your meals of a day at the places mentioned above and still have room for supper – Don Humm – a small late-night Thai take-out place is opened till the wee hours in the morning. Located in the neighbouring district of Cherng Talay, which is really a 3-minute drive from the beach – Don Humm has the best value for money offerings. Their deep-fried battered prawns go perfectly with their chicken congee and the whole meal will cost you no more than 100 baht! Bear in mind that Don Humm can easily be missed as it is located 20m after a sharp bend that is about 50m after the Red Room.
