Year of the Snake

Posted by Andaman Sam on February 1st, 2013 filed in Activities, Family fun, Festivals, Partying, The locals, Tourist tips

Phuket has a very large Chinese community, in fact it is one of the largest in the entire Kingdom, so it should not be surprising to learn that each year they have a massive Chinese New Year Festival, and this year is no different. The year of the snake starts on February 10th, though the festivities will take place in Phuket from the 15th to the 17th. As well as the Chinese New Year the three day festival will also include the 14th Old Phuket Festival.

This colourful three day festival will be held in Old Phuket Town in Her Majesty the queen’s sixth cycle birthday Anniversary Park as well as along Thalang Road, Krabi Road, Dibuk Road and Phang Nga Road. All of these roads will be closed off to traffic in the evening when they will turn into quite a show, with dragon dancing, traditional Thai dancing and live music, as well as stalls selling food, souvenirs and sweets.

In the day time stroll along the streets of Old Phuket Town to see many of the houses and shops decorated with red banners, which bring good luck in the coming year. Inside will be flowers, tangerines and dried fruit, all of which are symbolic and are thought to bring good fortune to the family living in the home.

Happy Chinese New Year!
